Iran Secretly Burying Dead Protestors?

Maybe, according to some reports.

Majid Nasirpour, a reformist lawmaker who serves on the parliament’s Social Affairs Committee, filed a request for an inquiry, reported the website Parlemannews.ir.

“This news story needs to be verified,” he told the website Saturday. “I will ask the committee to investigate the allegations.”

The number of those killed during the weeks of violence that followed the disputed June 12 presidential election is a source of controversy: Iranian officials say that as few as 20 died, nine of whom were pro-government militiamen. Iranian opposition figures say that at least 69 have been killed, and Western officials in Tehran estimate the number of dead nationwide to be in the hundreds.

Norooznews, the online incarnation of a respected newspaper shut down by authorities in 2002, said it had obtained the registration numbers of the burial permits to back up its report. The website previously reported that bodies were piled up at a mortuary in southwest Tehran.

Remember That German “Honour Killing” Suspect Story From A Few Weeks Ago?

A few weeks ago, I brought up the story about a guy in Germany of Afghan origin who killed his sister to preserve the “Family Honor”.

Well, it turns out this guy had a few other activities going at the same time.

“We are looking into other suspicions of rape in another incident,” said a spokesperson for the public prosecutor’s office in response to media reports.

German daily Die Welt reported Thursday that the man had met a young Afghan woman online, who he drugged and raped with an accomplice in Hamburg. He allegedly gloated about the incident online.

The man admitted to police that he killed his sister last week because she had turned away from her family, DDP reported. The family immigrated to Germany from Afghanistan 13 years ago, German news magazine Der Spiegel reported in its online edition. Both siblings have German citizenship.

The girl died early on Friday morning of multiple stab wounds in Hamburg’s Sankt Georg district.

The man had already been prosecuted for assaulting his sister and others. He was sentenced in March on an assault charge to one year and five months without possibility of probation, the Hamburg prosecutor’s office told German press agency DDP on Monday.

This time, a man of Afghan origins who stabbed a rabbi was sentenced to jail.

The 23-year-old Said A. knifed the 42-year-old Rabbi Zalman Gurevitch in the stomach after shouting, “I’m going to stab you, you damn Jew,” according to witnesses.

Prosecutors had originally intended to charge the man with attempted manslaughter but pursued charges of grievous bodily harm instead, due to lack of evidence. They had asked the court for four years.

The man had requested his March sentence be deferred, prosecutors said. He was notified in writing on Wednesday – a day before the stabbing – that the request had been rejected.

Police were also investigating earlier claims that he assaulted two of his sisters, including the girl stabbed last week.

Police arrested the man on Friday after the stabbing death of his 16-year-old sister early Friday morning in Hamburg’s Sankt Georg district. Neighbours and a passing group of youths heard the girl screaming near the Berliner Tor metro stop and called police at 11:21 pm on Thursday. The girl died about an hour later at the scene of the stabbing.

The girl’s oldest brother – like her a German citizen of Afghan origin – admitted to police he had killed her because she had turned away from her family, DDP reported. The family immigrated to Germany from Afghanistan 13 years ago, German news magazine Der Spiegel reported in its online edition.

The brother was charged in February with assaulting the 16-year-old girl and another of his sisters, DDP reported. Senior prosecutor Rüdiger Bagger denied reports that the man had already been sentenced in that case, saying that it was still pending.

And, surprisingly, the man’s religious affiliation is absent. I guess he was a Romulan then. Or maybe a Zoroastrian.

A 50-year-old Saudi woman asked for divorce after her husband lifted her face veil while she was sleeping, local press reported.

For 30 years, the wife said she never showed her face to her husband in conformity with the tradition of her native village near the south western Saudi city of Khamis Mushayt.

“After all these years, he tries to commit such a big mistake,” the wife told Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadh, after she left the house in total disbelief.

As soon as the voice mail stopped playing, the Petees began trying to reach their son in Afghanistan. The family figured out Petee had tried to call home earlier that day, but he didn’t leave a message and the phone later redialed during battle.

They eventually reached their son.

“I finally got a hold of him,” Sandie Petee said. “He was embarrassed, he said, ‘Don’t let Grandma hear it.’”
