Jenner A. Alvarenga, 29, denied he stole a dress from Brazilian Fashion at 137 Concord St., saying he bought it from someone on the street, police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said.

A witness called police around 1:45 a.m. and said he saw a man break the window at the dress shop and take something. The man then tried, but failed, to break a window to get into the Padaria Brasil Bakery, the lieutenant said.

“The officers arrived there and they found a disrobed mannequin,” Shastany said.

The witness gave police a description of a suspect, and a few minutes later the officers found Alvarenga walking on Howard Street carrying a blue dress, police said.

“When the man saw the officers approaching, he threw the dress on the ground,” said Shastany. “He said he just bought the dress from a guy for $10.”

Alvarenga could not identify the man or say where or when he had bought the dress. He then said he bought the dress for $5, police said.

The victim of the attack was found by a neighbour, who alerted the police. He was initially taken to Sunderby hospital but was later transferred by helicopter to Norrland University Hospital in Umeå where his situation remained critical on Wednesday morning.

For twenty years a feud has divided the neighbouring families of the victim and his attacker.
