It looks as though this will be your year.
“It has definitely reached a range where consumers will need to think about how to keep things in proportion,” tourism chief Gabriele Weishäupl said, punning in German on the word ‘maß,’ which can mean a litre or a proportion.
In recent months, grain prices have been spiralling, in part because of growing demand for biofuels to help combat climate change but also because strong demand from developing countries and extreme weather.
This is a true tragedy.

Could be worse. They could be using hops and barley for bio-fuels, too. You’d see a worldwide revolt if that happened.
Damn I sure miss a good beer sometimes…
I am worried, however, about the wheat rust thing. I think wheat prices are going to go through the roof and lots of people will starve.

Yeah. That would be a problem. And with more and more people growing corn, wheat shortages will get worse.

As I understand it the wheat rust has moved from Africa into Pakistan, and next thing you know India and Europe will see it. Problem is only at 70% of the wheat crops out there are resistant to it, and in the poorer countries where you can’t afford to treat with fungicides, your crops die.
I bet potatoes suddenly skyrocket. They are dirt cheap, easy to grow, very nutritious, and they taste really good with bacon and butter, chives and garlic…

Not inly would the crops not be resistant, but overfarming of wheat and/or potatoes or whatever to make money will only destroy the land even more.
And these poorer countries don’t won’t practice soil conservation either.

Fun Fact: Nigeria used to export about 35% of all of the produce produced before oil was discovered in the Niger Delta.
Now they import 98% not due to oil taking up farmland, but from locals leaving the fields to work the pipelines.
-Don’t know how this applies…
